Funding opportunities

ASPAB supports student development and training through travel subsides to attend ASPAB conferences and grants to attend international conferences, workshops, courses as well as herbaria and laboratory visits.


Student members may be eligible for student travel subsidies to attend ASPAB conferences. Application should be made on the Student ASPAB Travel form.
The following criteria must be met:

• At least 12 months membership prior to the conference;
• Students must deliver an oral or poster presentation;
• Students must provide a Proof of Student Status letter on departmental letterhead, signed by the supervisor or Head of Department. The letter must indicate that the greater part of the work was the student's;
• Copies of travel receipts.

Grants will only be paid AFTER all the relevant criteria have been met (which includes providing receipts). There will no longer be any advances. Applications will be considered throughout the year to support travel and should indicate whether the student has funding from their home institution to assist ASPAB committee in distributing funds.

Student members may apply for an international travel grant to attend conferences, workshops, courses as well as herbaria and laboratory visits. To apply for a grant, please use the ASPAB International Travel form.
Only one successful grant will be awarded to any student for International Travel during their candidature.

Grants will be considered if the following criteria are met:
• Students must attend an international conference and give a presentation, participate in an internationally recognised course or visit a recognised herbarium or laboratory. Proof of participation is required and should be in the form of a letter of acceptance from conference organisers, course co-ordinators or laboratory administrators.
• A 'Proof of Student Status" letter, with Departmental letterhead, signed by the supervisor or Head of Department is required.
• Proof that travel was actually undertaken (e.g. copies of boarding passes etc). In the event of non-attendance due to medical reasons where the student is unable to claim refunds of fares or expenses, a copy of a Medical Certificate should be forwarded to the Secretary. Once sighted by the Secretary, the certificate will be destroyed. It will not be shown to any other person.
• A student must have been a member for at least 12 months prior to application.
• Recipient must submit a review of their trip for publication in the ASPAB newsletter, describing or summarising the work they undertook.
